"Love is at the center of our lives... a cardinal virtue. But philosophers over the millennia have been particularly flummoxed about how and why we come to love other people and the moral significance of our ability to love. In this talk, I'll show how we can use the famous Parable of the Good Samaritan as a philosophical text, guiding us on these questions. We'll consider whether it is possible to love strangers and whether it is morally OK to extend love in this way. I'll defend a particular conception of what it is to love strangers in the modern world, and why this should be the central theme of ethics."
