How to Get Your First Clinical Experience 🩺
Graduate programs consider clinical experience to be any activity where you have direct contact with patients or closely observe healthcare delivery in a medical setting.
Therefore, all of the following are classified as clinical opportunities.
Direct Clinical Experience

Paid Roles - Working as a Medical Assistant (MA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), paramedic, phlebotomist, or physical therapy assistant.
Heads up! Certification is not a requirement for medical assistants in Arkansas.

Patient-Facing Volunteering - Escorting patients in a nursing home, hospice, or volunteering, assisting nurses, and comforting patients all count. We’ll be sending out more information on clinical volunteer opportunities.

Clinical Research - Research that involves direct contact with participants. This can be through interviews or taking vital signs.
Quick tip! Don't limit yourself to large hospitals. Smaller clinics and private practices may also offer valuable opportunities, and may have less requirements for certification.
Observational Experience

Shadowing - observing physicians and other health professionals during their day-to-day and patient visits/procedures.

Scribing - documenting patient visits in real time.
